First Sunrise at sea…

 … as we approach the Uruguayan coastline. Moon hasn’t set but el sol is making a grand appearance.



We are headed for an early breakfast “topside”, then to lounge in the open air of the front row as we enter Montevideo.

 Often in setting up a competition the promoters seek parody between contestants so that the level of competition is maximized. Today, the daily bulletin “Currents”, published each day on board and delivered directly to each stateroom, proclaimed, “Experience Paroti,” the Brazilian community tucked away in a large yet shallow harbor. I’m not sure that anyone would rate Paroti as “unequaled” in any category other than remoteness. The harbor is dotted with any number of islands, most big enough only for a single dwelling. Apparently the government realized that the remote location, combined with the fact that travel between the individuals who call this home, made the ownership of these islands would quickly go to wealthy foreigners, so they declared them Nationalized. A Very Special Day- Preamble

They told us it would be cooler this time of year in Brazil but…  When we booked this cruise we had both been intrigued by the locale, having never been to the continent of South America. The booking date(s) were predetermined by the cruise ship line, Oceania. It was the final cruise of their summer, heading into fall, or as they call it, rainy season. We accepted the dates as written, and neither my lovely lady or I noticed that, mid-cruise, was our anniversary.  When it did come to our attention we attempted to find a restaurant that could serve a meal that we both would love. With my aversion to vegetables, this usually means a steak-house, or at least something a self-respecting carnivore would adore. We were unable to make those arrangements pre-boarding. Final stop - Rio de Janeiro

 This morning, about 0700 hours, our home-away-from-home for the last 12 days tied up to the pier in Rio de Janeiro. Rio was the colonial capital of Brazil, under the Crown of the King of Portugal, from 1763 until 1815 when it became the Capital of the United Kingdom of Portugal, Brazil, and the Algarves, after Napoleon invaded Portugal and the King fled to Brazil. It was about a year later that he returned to the Iberian Peninsula but left his young son here. According to the story our tour guide recited yesterday, the King’s son was not old enough to be a monarch. When the boy turned 15, he was declared the ruler of Brazil and, shortly thereafter, granted Brazil their independence.  (This story could not be completely confirmed by Google.) Portugal was, during this brief period in their history, the only country to have its capital on a different continent.
