Quick hits

 Some quick observations:

Some habits are hard to break. When we left our stateroom this morning Alicia insisted on placing the “Privacy Please” sign outside the door so they wouldn’t come in and straighten up the room while we were at breakfast. The reason was simply that “she didn’t have time to clean up” the room before we left.


We are in Day 9 (of 12) and are still discovering new areas of the ship. There have been several mentions of spa services but we just found the spa (we dropped breadcrumbs in the hallway so Alicia could find her way back there later.)


The plumbing system in the bathrooms is interesting (perhaps only to me?) When one uses the commode, the placard next to it explains that, to flush, you are to close the lid and push the button firmly. I’m sure there is a sound reason for not depending on gravity to empty the commode but it appears that they use some sort of pressurized system. When the button is pushed a cacophony of sound is unleashed, reaching decimal levels not heard since my days in the Navy when our electric shop was directly beneath the jet engines of the planes being launched by the catapult next door.

What a day- Did anyone mention it was “The rainy season?”

 We awoke early this morning. We were required to have our luggage packed and outside our door last night by 10 pm, so the ritual this day was simplified. Arise, freshen and dress with the clothes we wore yesterday, then go to breakfast. While there, we met several of the couples with whom we had broken bread, and bid our fond fairwells. Returning to our stateroom, we grabbed our I.D.s and carryon bags and headed to level 5. It was there that we met face-to-face with the image outside our window. We had been told several times that March 21st marked the beginning of the rainy season (mentioned as if any rain prior to that date was illegal). This morning we walked head first into the rain portion of the new season. We returned to terra firma about 7:30, not knowing how long it would take to make it through customs and waiting behind hundreds of others who were doing likewise. Tigre Delta excursion

 We are now veterans of our first land excursion and, in true cart-before-the-horse fashion, we did it without the virtue of sailing the high seas! (Disclaimer- The facts contained herein are to be taken as one would the facts revealed during a political campaign. Read them/ study them, but don’t take them as gospel. They are based on second hand knowledge, culled from a distorting speaker, connected to a sometimes functional microphone, operated by a fast-speaking tour guide who is rattling off information at a rate roughly 2X the comprehension pace of an aging mind.) The Tigre River emerges from the Ecuadorian confluence of two rivers (let’s call them A and B, because you C I don’t remember their names). After flowing for hundreds of miles the water turns a yucky brown (apparently because pink was already taken by the flamingos). The area just north of Buenos Aires is known as the Tigre Delta. Day 7 - São Francisco Do Sul

 São Francisco is the oldest city in the state of Santa Catarina (founded in the early 16th century) and third oldest in all of Brazil. My excursion today was titled “Highlights of São Francisco and Joinville” and included, in about a 4 hour span of time, a drive by bus of about 1hr and 10 minutes one way, to the town of Joinville where we visited the studio of acclaimed (I’m told) artist Juarez Machado, a (very) quick look at an old Cathedral (about 5 minutes, during a mass!) with multiple stained glass windows, a walk in the sun to an immigration office where we saw only the exterior of the building, then the long ride back to the terminal, load the “tender” for the second half of the 45-50 minute round trip ride to and from the ship.  If you are a big lover of art, in its many forms, the studio tour was likely a delight.
